Incidence of cystoid macular edema following routine cataract surgery

• A retrospective analysis was performed on 5,380 eyes for the rate of cystoid macular edema development following uncomplicated Phacoemulsification with four different therapeutic regimens: postoperative generic ketorolac 0.4% and prednisolone 1%, postoperative name-brand ketorolac 0.45% and prednisolone 1%, postoperative bromfenac 0.09% and prednisolone 1%, preoperative and postoperative bromfenac 0.09% alone.
• Topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs lower the risk of post-cataract surgery cystoid macular edema compared to other therapies evaluated.
• Postoperative generic ketorolac 0.45% and prednisolone 1% demonstrated the highest rate of cystoid macular edema development.
• Bromfenac without corticosteroids demonstrated lower rates of cystoid macular edema compared to other combinations of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs with corticosteroids.
